Altitude Summit: Design and Blogging

Altitude Design Summit 2011 Logo

I love that there have been blog conferences geared toward specific niches popping up all over the place this year, giving bloggers even more choices when choosing a conference that suits them. But remember; even if you aren’t a niche blogger, you can still attend these conferences as you’ll still learn about blogging and social media as a whole.

The Altitude Design Summit is one of those niche conferences as it’s geared towards lifestyle bloggers or those who love design, direct media, or advertising. Happening January 19-22nd, 2010 in Salt Lake City, attendees will not only be learning and connecting, but they will also be able to ski and check out the Sundance Festival which is happening during the conference dates.

Here is what Sara Urquhart, the conference coordinator had to say about Altitude Design Summit:

Beautiful. Smart. Funny. Thoughtful. Altitude Design Summit is everything your high school crush wasn’t. And everything your blog is. And it’s not just about the blogs. It’s a chance to connect with all the beautiful people behind the blogs. Alt 2010 attendees called the summit everything from “surreal” to “totally real”. And they are right.

What makes this conference unique?

We’ve created a place where design and lifestyle bloggers in all their forms (i.e. foodies, photographers, travelers, product placers, adventurers, etc.) come together, share ideas, and connect with advertisers.

What are some of the highlights or features of this conference?

The buzz between the attendees is amazing. Also the speakers are off-the charts. 2010 included powerhouses like Dooce, Jeroen Bours, Apartment Therapy, notcot, and Design Sponge. The tweets flew during one lunch when Natzke and DJ Earworm blew our collective minds. Bonus features you won’t find anywhere else include free passes to The Greatest Snow on Earth at Solitude Mountain Resort and entrance to the Outdoor Retailers Convention. Oh, and we can hook you up with screening passes to a little film festival called Sundance.

Does this conference have different learning tracks or focuses?

This year’s summit will focus on design, direct media and advertising. What’s
working and what’s not. If you’re obsessed with at least two of the items above, Altitude Design Summit is the place to be, because we feed those obsessions.

If you could share your top 3 tips for conference newbies, what would they be?

  • Come early and stay late. Some of the best connections happen off-line.
  • Come with a purpose in mind. Do you want to learn how to better market your blog? Or do you need an inspiration jump-start? Are you looking for sponsors? Or would some new tools bring a smile to your face? That said sometimes the “ah-ha” moments come from unexpected places at unpredictable times. That’s what makes them so beautiful!
  • Bring a coat. And maybe a beautiful scarf. Salt Lake mountains in January equals snow. It’s mesmerizing to sit by the huge fireplace at the Grand America sipping cocoa and watching as the graceful snowflakes drift by. It’s also exhilarating to shred through the White Stuff on a board or skis. However you choose to enjoy it, snow is cold stuff. Make like a boy scout and be prepared.
